President John Dramani Mahama has announced the immediate cancellation of fuel allowance payments and allocations to all political appointees.
The directive, according to a statement signed by Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu on Tuesday, 17 June 2025, forms part of government efforts to reduce public expenditure and channel resources into critical priority areas.
The government says the measure is intended to curb excessive spending and signal the administration’s commitment to sharing in the sacrifices demanded of citizens.
This latest action is part of a broader austerity agenda rolled out by the Mahama-led administration. Other recent cost-cutting steps include a reduction in the size of government and the cancellation of satellite TV subscriptions for state institutions.
The decision also comes ahead of the introduction of a GHS1.00 levy on each litre of fuel purchased, which is expected to support fuel procurement for national power generation.
By leading with personal and political restraint, the President hopes to inspire similar responsibility across the public sector and among citizens.
Government communicators describe the move as a demonstration of prudent financial management and leadership by example.
