A tragic incident occurred at Wasa Ankonsia in the Western Region when an illegal mining (galamsey) pit collapsed, resulting in the death of one person and leaving two others seriously injured.
The deceased, identified as Haruna Osman, was trapped beneath the rubble when the pit caved in. Several individuals were believed to be working in the pit at the time of the collapse.
Rescue efforts were quickly launched, and two survivors were retrieved and rushed to the hospital for medical treatment. Unfortunately, Haruna Osman could not be saved. His body was later recovered and buried according to Islamic customs.
The Wasa Akropong Police have begun investigations to determine the exact cause of the collapse and the circumstances surrounding the illegal mining operation.
This incident once again underscores the dangers associated with galamsey activities in Ghana, which continue to claim lives and cause injuries. It also serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need for stricter enforcement of mining laws and the provision of safer, legal livelihood alternatives for individuals in mining communities.
