The National Labour Commission (NLC) has declared the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) illegal and has called for its immediate termination.

According to the Commission, the strike contravenes the law because the GRNMA failed to attend a scheduled meeting on June 4, 2025, involving the NLC, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Finance, which was intended to address their concerns.

The NLC cited Section 159 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), which outlines the legal requirements for initiating industrial action. The Commission emphasized that GRNMA’s failure to comply with these procedures renders the strike unlawful.

Despite the ruling, GRNMA has maintained its stance, insisting the strike will continue until all terms outlined in the collective agreement are fully implemented.

Health Minister Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has joined the NLC in urging the association to end the strike and return to the negotiation table. He stressed the importance of prioritizing patient welfare and working toward a lasting resolution.

The strike has caused widespread disruption to healthcare services across the country, with reports of overcrowded emergency units and delays in treatment in several public hospitals.
