Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and other security agencies to respect the constitutional rights of the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, following his arrest and detention on May 27.

In a Facebook post sighted on Wednesday, May 28, Dr. Bawumia expressed concern over Wontumi’s continued detention without clear charges or confirmed information regarding his whereabouts.

He emphasized that justice and due process are fundamental pillars of Ghana’s democracy.

“No Ghanaian, regardless of political affiliation or status, should ever be denied their constitutional rights. Ghana must always remain a nation governed by law not by arbitrary power,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia revealed that he has been in contact with Chairman Wontumi’s legal team to ensure his rights are protected. He commended the team for their professionalism and vigilance, and stressed the importance of state institutions acting lawfully and transparently.

The former Vice President cautioned that any failure by state institutions to operate within the law could erode public trust in Ghana’s justice system. He reiterated the need for a legal system that is both firm and fair, reinforcing Ghana’s identity as a country governed by the rule of law.
