Ghana’s fight against cholera has received a major boost as the Ghana Health Service (GHS) rolls out a massive four-day oral vaccination campaign in the Central Region. The exercise targets 541,798 individuals across three districts:
1- Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Municipality
2- Cape Coast Metropolis
3- Mfantseman Municipality
This intervention comes in response to a worrying surge in cholera cases in the region, which has already claimed nearly 30 lives.
Scheduled to run from April 4 to 7, 2025, the vaccination drive is open to individuals aged one year and above, with pregnant and lactating mothers being the only exceptions.
Dr. Joojo Cobbinah, Deputy Director of Public Health in the Central Region, has assured the public that the vaccines are safe and unlikely to cause adverse post-vaccination symptoms.
Alongside the vaccination effort, health officials are emphasizing the importance of personal and environmental hygiene, drawing lessons from the COVID-19 era.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Head of Immunization in Ghana, Mr. Fred Osei Sarpong, is calling on citizens to take responsibility for their community’s sanitation rather than relying on external assistance.
