The Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Ato Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has expressed his desire to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in the 9th Parliament if given the opportunity.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s “Ekosii Sen” program on Tuesday, December 17th, Mr. Afenyo-Markin stated, “If given the chance, I would love to lead and will do everything I can.” He emphasized that the decision to lead the caucus ultimately lies with the party, noting, “It is a political party, and many factors will come into play. Leadership in Parliament is not an entitlement; it is the party’s prerogative to decide.”

Reflecting on his political journey, Mr. Afenyo-Markin acknowledged that he initially did not have the chance to serve in higher leadership positions during the party’s first term in office. “When we came to power in our first term, some first-time members had the opportunity to serve, but I did not. However, I stayed focused and fulfilled my responsibilities. Over time, the party placed me where I am now,” he explained.

He further emphasized his readiness to take on the role if nominated. “If the party believes, based on my qualifications, that I am the right person for the job, I would be honored to lead. I will give it my all and create a formidable force in Parliament, similar to the group from 1997,” he added.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin also highlighted the importance of unity and teamwork within the caucus. “With the men and women we have now, along with those coming on board, I hope we can unite and work together, regardless of our numbers. It’s not just about the leader; it’s about building a team that can deliver for both the party and the country.”

He acknowledged that the party must carefully evaluate various factors before making decisions on leadership roles. Nonetheless, he remains optimistic about the future. “We will continue to work hard, and if the opportunity arises, I will do my best to strengthen our parliamentary team,” he concluded.
