Veteran Ghanaian gospel musician Yaw Sarpong will be laid to rest on May 9, 2026, at the Asuofua Town Park in Kumasi.
Final funeral rites for the celebrated gospel icon will begin on Friday, May 8, with a wake-keeping ceremony, followed by a lying in state on Saturday morning at the same venue.
Mourners attending the burial service have been asked to wear black and red, while white attire is designated for the thanksgiving service on Sunday.
Sources close to the family said the gospel musician passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Emena Hospital in Kumasi, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
Known for timeless gospel hits including Wo Haw Ne Sɛn, Dua Esi Asubonten, Honhom Kronkron and Tenabea Fororo, Yaw Sarpong inspired generations of gospel music lovers across Ghana and beyond.
Together with the Asomafo Band, he played a major role in shaping Ghana’s gospel music industry and was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards 2025.
