GWL cites power outages, aquatic weeds for water supply disruptions in Accra, Tema

The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced intermittent disruptions in water supply affecting parts of eastern Accra and the Tema Region, attributing the situation to unstable electricity supply and operational challenges at its Kpong Water Treatment Plant.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 28 April 2026, the utility provider explained that irregular power supply to the Kpong facility and its booster stations has significantly affected production and distribution to several communities.

According to GWL, the treatment and transmission of water depend heavily on consistent electricity to power pumps, treatment processes, and distribution systems.

It stressed that any fluctuation in power supply directly affects its ability to deliver water to consumers, resulting in reduced output and intermittent service in affected areas.

The company also disclosed that its operations have been further strained by the proliferation of aquatic weeds at the intake point of the Kpong plant.

While noting that such occurrences are periodic, GWL indicated that recent heavy rains around Akosombo have worsened the situation, increasing the volume of weeds and clogging intake screens, thereby restricting the abstraction of raw water for treatment.

Technical teams, it said, are currently working continuously to clear the weeds and stabilise operations at the facility.

GWL further revealed that it is engaging key stakeholders in the power sector, including the Volta River Authority, Ghana Grid Company and the Electricity Company of Ghana, to help restore stable power supply to the plant.

The combined impact of the erratic electricity supply and the operational constraints at the intake system has led to reduced and inconsistent water distribution to several communities in eastern Accra and the Tema enclave.

The company has apologised to customers for the inconvenience and appealed for patience while efforts are underway to restore normal supply.

GWL assured the public that all necessary measures are being implemented to resolve the challenges and return water supply to stable levels in the affected areas.
