Former Public Sector Reforms Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Kusi Boafo, has revealed that the party is currently undergoing reforms aimed at addressing key internal challenges.
Speaking in an interview on Denkyiraman Radio, Mr. Boafo said widespread apathy among party members during the 2024 general elections contributed significantly to the NPP’s defeat.
He explained that the COVID-19 pandemic, which had a severe global economic impact, also shaped Ghana’s political landscape. According to him, many incumbent governments across the world lost elections under similar circumstances.
“I wasn’t surprised when the NDC came to power. In fact, even they were surprised. The pandemic created unfavorable conditions for the NPP government, which ultimately led to the electoral loss,” he said.
Mr. Boafo described the current state of the NPP as disorganized and plagued by apathy, internal wrangling, and blame-shifting.
“Until the NPP resolves its internal problems and lack of unity, it will be very difficult for the party to win any election except in strongholds where it can secure over 60% of the vote,” he cautioned.
He further noted that growing tensions over the flagbearership contest are deepening divisions within the party.
“The NDC has fewer internal divisions compared to the NPP. Ironically, the NPP, despite being in opposition, should be focused on addressing its weaknesses. Yet it is the ruling government that appears more subdued,” he observed.
Mr. Boafo urged the NPP to resolve its internal disputes and ensure a peaceful selection process for its next flagbearer.
“A political party divided into factions cannot win elections. These divisions often lead to the exposure of internal secrets during campaigns, breeding enmity and betrayal. Opponents always capitalize on such chaos to gain political advantage,” he concluded.
