Awula Serwaa, Co-founder of Eco-Conscious Citizen Ghana, has praised the Lands Minister’s decision to revoke Legislative Instruments L.I. 2462 and L.I. 2510, describing it as “a step in the right direction.” Speaking on Denkyiraman Radio’s National Agenda, she urged stakeholders to remain cautiously optimistic, recalling previous unfulfilled promises on similar actions.

She cautioned that revoking a single legal instrument will not end illegal mining (galamsey), stressing the need for targeted interventions in mining hotspots. She also criticized weak regulatory oversight that allows miners with questionable licenses to operate freely, urging the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to intensify monitoring and enforce compliance.

Awula Serwaa further called on the government to establish a rapid response system for environmental emergencies and provide citizens with dedicated phone lines to report illegal mining activities, including invasions of farms and protected areas.
