President John Dramani Mahama has announced the creation of the Children’s Support Fund, a compassionate initiative dedicated to safeguarding the future of the children left behind by the August 6 military helicopter tragedy.
Speaking at the state funeral on Friday at Independence Square, where six of the eight victims were laid to rest, the President described the fund as a long-term commitment to the educational, health, and general welfare needs of the bereaved children.
“The tragedy has cast its shadow over the heart of Ghana,” he said, pledging that the nation would not abandon its youngest victims. The fund will cover school fees from basic education through to university or vocational training, and will also provide for healthcare, clothing, accommodation, and other essential needs ensuring that no child is left without the opportunity to thrive.
Stanbic Bank has made the first contribution of GH₵500,000, with the government set to add its own seed capital. President Mahama called on individuals, organisations, and international partners to donate generously. To guarantee accountability, annual reports on the fund’s operations will be made public.
He assured mourners that the full operational framework of the fund would be released within 30 days, emphasising that the children of the fallen officers will be cared for “as the sons and daughters of Ghana.”
