The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has raised serious concerns over a significant increase in deaths across the country, coinciding with the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

MOWAG’s General Secretary, Richard Kofi Jordan, described the development as “alarming,” noting a sharp rise in bodies being brought in from homes rather than hospitals.

“We’re receiving more bodies than usual, and it’s not surprising given the absence of nurses,” Mr. Jordan stated.

He attributed the surge in deaths to people avoiding medical facilities due to the strike, leading to preventable fatalities.

The situation is placing immense pressure on mortuary workers, who are struggling to manage the rising numbers.

“If we can’t handle it anymore, we’ll have to refer families to the police station. It’s a serious issue that should have been prevented,” Mr. Jordan warned.

He urged authorities to act swiftly to resolve the impasse and prevent further loss of life.
