The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to removing beggars and rough sleepers from major cities across Ghana, citing national security concerns.
Speaking during a visit to the Northern Region, the Minister revealed that a nationwide operation is imminent, targeting five major cities, including Tamale.
Muntaka emphasized that the presence of beggars on city streets poses more than just a nuisance they represent a potential threat to public safety and national security.
He referred to a recent crackdown in Accra, where over 2,000 foreign beggars were arrested. Nearly half have already been repatriated, with the rest expected to be processed and removed by the end of the week.
“The beggars are not just a nuisance but a threat to our national security. By the close of this week, we should be able to finish removing all of them,” he said.
“I can assure the rest of them they either return to where they are coming from, because very soon, we are coming after all of them, including the prostitutes parading our streets. We will not rest on our oars; we will go after them until we remove all of them.”
The Minister also issued a stern warning to sex workers operating openly on the streets, urging them to leave voluntarily or face forced removal as part of the broader security operation.
“We will not rest until we remove all of them,” he concluded.
