The High Court of Ghana has awarded GH¢5 million in general damages against Oliver Barker-Vormawor in favour of former National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah, in a defamation case.

The Court also ordered Barker-Vormawor to pay GH¢100,000 in costs to the Plaintiff.

Delivering judgment, Justice (Rev.) Joseph Owusu Adu-Agyeman said all the reliefs sought by Mr Kan Dapaah were granted, except that the compensation claim of GH¢10 million was reduced to GH¢5 million.

Prior to the ruling, counsel for Barker-Vormawor, led by Baffour Gyau Bonsu Ashia, moved a motion for the relistment of their Statement of Defence and Witness Statement, which had earlier been struck out.

The Court dismissed the application, describing it as alien to the rules.

Mr Kan Dapaah had sued Mr Barker-Vormawor over allegations that he was offered one million dollars to stop his activism against the government.

The former Minister denied the allegation and filed a suit seeking GH¢10 million in general damages, including aggravated and/or exemplary damages, for defamation.

He also sought an apology and retraction of the alleged defamatory words, as well as a perpetual injunction restraining the Defendant from repeating similar statements.

The ruling brings to a close the high-profile defamation suit between the two.
