The Circuit Court in Accra has remanded a 33-year-old trader, Latifa Salifu, into police custody until March 4, 2026, after she was arraigned on a provisional charge of stealing a baby.

Her plea was not taken, as investigations into the matter are still ongoing.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei told the court on Friday, February 20, 2026, that the accused had been served with the provisional charge and that the Police required more time to complete investigations.

He said the prosecution was seeking a remand order to enable investigators to finalise their work.

According to the prosecution, Salifu was arrested on Wednesday after she allegedly stole a baby at the Mamptobi Hospital in Accra.

The prosecution further indicated that investigators suspect the alleged act may involve a syndicate, raising concerns about the circumstances under which the accused is said to have committed the offence.

Defence counsel, Hamisu Muhammad, made an oral application for bail, arguing that his client is not a flight risk and has no prior brushes with the law.

Counsel told the court that the accused has two children, aged seven and 10, and would not interfere with police investigations or witnesses. He added that she lacks the resources to abscond and that individuals were prepared to stand as sureties for her.

The court, however, remanded the accused into police custody to reappear on March 4, 2026.
