The Director of Legal Affairs of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Godwin Eduzi Tamakloe, says Dr Bryan Acheampong appears to be positioning himself as a stronger alternative to former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Mr Kennedy Agyapong, in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential flagbearer race.
According to Mr Tamakloe, the emerging posture of Dr Acheampong suggests a strategic effort to narrow the contest within the opposition party to a direct contest between himself and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who is widely regarded as the frontrunner.
Speaking on the evolving dynamics of the NPP’s internal competition, the NDC Legal Director said the developments pointed to intensifying manoeuvring aimed at consolidating support and presenting Dr Acheampong as the most viable challenger to the Vice President.
Mr Tamakloe did not provide specific details on how the strategy was being implemented but described the situation as an “interesting” shift in the opposition party’s internal politics.
The comments come ahead of the NPP’s presidential primary scheduled for January 31.
