Residents and commuters in the Twifo Atti Morkwa District of the Central Region are appealing to the government and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) to introduce urgent measures to curb rising road accidents in the area.
Their demands include the installation of speed rumps and road signs along major accident-prone routes such as the Twifo Praso–Morkwa stretch, Bremang–Agona through Mintaso, Kotokye, Denkyira Awusiem, Dunkwa-On-Offin, and the Twifo Praso and Cape Coast road.
According to residents, dangerous curves particularly between Morkwa and Agona as well as Kotokye and Awusiem have become accident hotspots, with the district recording an estimated two road crashes weekly, often linked to overspeeding and the absence of warning signs.
Hon. George Sem Frimpong, Assembly Member for the Morkwa-Sebenso Electoral Area, confirmed the situation and appealed to contractors and road authorities to act swiftly to prevent further casualties.
Echoing the concerns, Mr. Joseph Arthur, Road Safety Officer for Twifo Atti Morkwa and Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira districts, described the trend as alarming. He noted that while drivers are regularly educated on traffic regulations, weak enforcement undermines compliance.
He emphasized that the introduction of traffic signs and speed control measures would significantly reduce accidents, improve compliance, and enhance overall road safety in the Central Region.
