One Dead, Four Trapped in Galamsey Pit Collapse at Twifo Mampong

A deadly galamsey pit collapse has struck Twifo Mampong in the Central Region, leaving four people trapped underground and one confirmed dead. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, September 25, 2025.

According to preliminary information, five young men were engaged in illegal mining at the site. Four had entered the pit while another operated a pumping machine on the surface. The machine operator managed to escape and quickly raised an alarm after the collapse.

Rescue efforts are currently underway as personnel from the police, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and local volunteers work tirelessly to reach the trapped miners and secure the area.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Twifo Atti-Morkwa, Hon. Isaac Yawson, confirmed the development in an interview, revealing that initial investigations indicate the site belongs to a well-known illegal miner. However, the victims are believed to have sneaked in at night without the owner’s approval.

Hon. Yawson added that he has directed the immediate arrest of the pit owner while recovery operations continue. Authorities say they will not relent until all the trapped individuals are found—dead or alive.
