Bagbin Renews Call for MPs’ Healthcare Reform Following Death of Ernest Kumi

Speaker Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has renewed his call for comprehensive healthcare reforms for Members of Parliament, following the sudden death of Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi.

Addressing Parliament, Bagbin urged lawmakers to prioritize their health by undergoing regular medical checkups and adopting active lifestyles. He emphasized the dangers of prolonged inactivity, warning that neglecting one’s health can have dire consequences.

“This should be a wake-up call to all of us,” the Speaker said, reflecting on Kumi’s untimely passing.

Bagbin has long advocated for improved healthcare, including an earlier proposal to expand the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to cover chronic conditions such as lupus.

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Health Committee, chaired by Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, is working to tackle broader systemic challenges within Ghana’s healthcare system, including staff shortages, inadequate infrastructure, and under-resourced facilities.
