The Alliance of Drivers Ghana has announced a 30% increase in transport fares effective Monday, July 21, 2025, in response to the government’s proposed GH₵1 Energy Sector Levy on fuel.

According to the alliance, the new levy will place an additional burden on drivers, pushing up operational costs across the transport sector. These increased expenses, they say, must be passed on to commuters.

Fuel prices have already seen a sharp rise in recent weeks. Petrol has jumped from GH₵12.07 to GH₵12.88 per liter, while diesel now sells at GH₵14.38, up from GH₵13.20. The Alliance anticipates another 9% fuel price increase in the next pricing window.

In addition to announcing the fare adjustment, the group has also criticized the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), accusing it of failing to adequately represent the interests of commercial drivers.

The Alliance has urged commuters to prepare for the adjusted fares, which they say are necessary for the sustainability of transport services under the current economic conditions.
