A group of Level 400 students at the University of Ghana is preparing to petition the University’s Sports Directorate to prevent the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from holding its National Annual Delegates Conference at the UG Sports Stadium from July 17 to 19, 2025.
The students argue that the gathering of thousands of delegates poses a significant COVID-19 risk to the campus and the wider community, potentially breaching health protocols set by the University Health Directorate.
They reference a recent resurgence of COVID-19 cases on campus, which prompted the suspension of social gatherings and renewed calls for heightened vigilance. Current university health data shows 107 confirmed cases out of 316 suspected infections within the university community.
The concerned students fear that hosting the NPP conference could transform the stadium into a transmission hotspot and potentially trigger a nationwide lockdown.
They are calling on the Sports Directorate, university management, and the government to intervene and immediately halt plans for the event.
