Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi Dies After Sudden Illness

The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, has passed away after complaining of chest pains.

According to his close friend, Seth Birikorang, Kumi died on Monday, July 7, 2025, at the Lister Hospital in Accra.

Kumi and Birikorang had traveled together to Takoradi on July 4 for an event and returned to Accra on Sunday, July 6, around 6:30 pm. Before parting ways, Kumi reminded Birikorang of a meeting scheduled for the following day.

The next morning, around 9:00 am, Birikorang received a distressing call from Kumi’s wife, informing him that the MP had fallen seriously ill and was rushed to the hospital around 2:00 am. Despite medical efforts, Kumi sadly passed away.

Birikorang tearfully recounted the moments leading up to Kumi’s death during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, expressing shock and grief over the loss of what he described as a “good man.”

Kumi’s sudden death has sent shockwaves through Parliament and the nation, with many paying tribute to his calm, intelligent, and promising leadership. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has extended condolences to his family, describing his passing as a “major blow” to the party and the country.
