The Union of Trainee Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UTNMG), has appealed to the government to extend the deadline for the ongoing validation exercise for health trainee allowances.
The current deadline, set for June 20, 2025, is described by the Union as too limited for many trainees to gather and submit the required documents, including SSNIT numbers, bank account details, and Ghana Card information.
In a communiqué signed by UTNMG President Agbeti Immortal and General Secretary Alavi Robert, the Union called on the Ministry of Health to reconsider the timeline.
“The Union of Trainee Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UTNMG), humbly appeals to the government, through the Ministry of Health, to reconsider the validation exercise for trainee allowances,” the statement said.
They noted that a significant number of trainees currently lack the necessary documentation, making it difficult to meet the deadline.
The Union also called for the inclusion of the 2024 trainee batch in the exercise, noting that they are owed 15 months’ worth of allowances.
Additionally, UTNMG urged the government to reconsider its January 2026 policy declaration regarding trainee allowance payments, citing the rising cost of living and the financial strain on trainees.
“We believe the government can find a solution that supports the welfare of trainee nurses and midwives,” the Union stated.
