A coalition spearheaded by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has launched a public demonstration in Accra, calling for the immediate reinstatement of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Her recent suspension by President John Dramani Mahama has ignited widespread political backlash, with critics describing the move as unconstitutional and politically motivated. Protesters gathered at a car park opposite the Supreme Court on Monday, preparing to march through the capital in defense of judicial independence.
The NPP-led coalition includes the Liberal Party of Ghana, National Democratic Party, People’s National Party, and Ghana Union Movement. Organizers argue that the Chief Justice’s suspension undermines the foundations of Ghana’s democracy and threatens the autonomy of the judiciary. In addition to the march, the coalition plans to submit formal petitions to both Parliament and the Office of the President, urging an immediate reversal of the decision and the implementation of stronger judicial safeguards.
“This isn’t just about one judge. it’s about the very fabric of our democracy,” said NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, addressing supporters. “If this goes unchecked, no judge will be shielded from political retribution.” The protest is expected to draw thousands, as tensions continue to mount over the implications of the Chief Justice’s removal.
