The Minority Caucus in Parliament is urging the government to swiftly reconstruct the Adum Market in Kumasi, which was ravaged by a recent fire.
The caucus emphasizes that the incident has had a devastating impact on the livelihoods of traders, making immediate government support crucial.
The fire, which occurred on March 21, destroyed shops and goods worth millions of Ghana cedis, leaving many traders financially distressed.
Led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Caucus visited the affected traders on April 14 and donated GHC 200,000 to support their recovery efforts.
They are calling on the government to draw from the Contingency Fund to provide financial assistance to the traders impacted by the fire.
Afenyo-Markin stressed that such support would help alleviate the burden on the traders and aid in their efforts to recover and rebuild.
Expressing sympathy, he pledged that the Minority Caucus would bring the matter to the floor of Parliament to further highlight the plight of the affected traders.
“I humbly appeal to the Ghanaian government to consider the plight of Adum Market traders affected by the recent fire. Given the government’s past commitments to various sectors, it’s imperative they provide relief to these struggling traders,” he said.
“We call on the government to utilize the Contingency Fund to swiftly support the Adum Market traders who are struggling after the fire. With commitment, we believe the market can be rebuilt within a year,” he added
