The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has dismissed calls for a state of emergency in Bawku following recent violent clashes.

Instead of declaring a state of emergency, the government has opted for alternative measures to maintain peace and stability in the area.

Among the measures in place is a curfew imposed on Bawku Municipality and its environs, with varying hours such as 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. or 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., aimed at maintaining law and order.

Additionally, there is a total ban on carrying arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons in the affected areas. Anyone found in possession of such items will be arrested and prosecuted.

The government has also urged chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and residents to exercise restraint and adopt non-violent approaches to resolving challenges and ensuring peace.

The minister’s comments come in the wake of a recent surge in violence, including a deadly confrontation between security forces and some youth, which resulted in multiple deaths and injuries.

The private residence of the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central was also allegedly set ablaze during the unrest.

These incidents have prompted various stakeholders and residents to call for stronger government intervention, including the declaration of a state of emergency, to restore peace in the area.

However, Minister Akamugri maintains that such a move is unnecessary at this time. He argues that the disturbances in Bawku are not continuous but rather sporadic, and are being swiftly addressed by security forces.

According to the minister, the flare-ups are isolated and quickly brought under control, suggesting that the situation remains manageable without resorting to extreme measures.

He also highlighted the role of traditional leadership in the conflict resolution process, noting that an eminent chief is currently handling the matter.

“We’ve entrusted the matter to a respected chief for resolution,” he said, emphasizing the significance of traditional structures in managing the situation.

He added, “The incidents aren’t daily occurrences, but rather isolated events.”
