Ghana’s Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has announced a $1 million initiative under the Feed Ghana Project aimed at empowering more than 1,500 small-scale farmers in northern Ghana. The initiative is designed to improve agricultural productivity and enhance food security, particularly in vegetable farming. Key aspects of the plan include targeted support for peasant farmers already engaged in tomato and vegetable cultivation.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM on Monday, April 14, 2025, Mr. Opoku emphasized the government’s commitment to grassroots empowerment, stating that while many farmers are already involved in tomato production, financial constraints have hindered their ability to expand. He highlighted that the support would not only be financial but also technical, giving farmers access to advanced agricultural technologies to help increase yield and compete effectively with regional producers like Burkina Faso.

To formalize the initiative, the Ministry is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Apex Bank on April 16. This partnership will lay out the framework for delivering the support package, including resource distribution and training. “Some farmers are already engaged in tomato production, so our team will identify and support them with the necessary resources,” Mr. Opoku stated, adding that the government is confident Ghana can surpass its neighbors in vegetable output through innovation and strategic investment.
