Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has thrown his full support behind Rev John Ntim Fordjour, the Assin South MP and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, following a controversial attempt by operatives of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) to arrest him. The arrest, reportedly over allegations of drug trafficking and money laundering, took place at the MP’s residence and sparked outrage within the Minority caucus. The incident was confirmed by New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong via a Facebook post.
Afenyo-Markin strongly condemned the NIB’s actions, labeling them a violation of parliamentary privileges and immunity. He insisted that the arrest attempt was unlawful and politically motivated, asserting that no formal communication had been received from the NIB through the Speaker of Parliament, contrary to claims by government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu. He described Fordjour as a respected figure within the caucus and vowed that any attempts to intimidate or isolate him would be fiercely resisted.
“Reverend is not a loner, he has not walked alone, and he will never walk alone,” Afenyo-Markin declared. He emphasized Fordjour’s key leadership role within the Defence and Interior Committee and praised his resilience in the face of controversy. Despite the serious allegations linked to suspicious international flights, Afenyo-Markin said Fordjour remains focused and fortified by faith and the unwavering support of his colleagues.
In a powerful statement, Afenyo-Markin rallied behind the embattled MP, declaring, “He walks through this unfortunate valley of the shadow of death, but he will fear no evil. Because he walks with his God and the strength of the mighty 88 behind him.” The Minority Leader ended his address with a firm message to government officials, warning against further intimidation and asserting: “Enough is enough.”
