The Upper Denkyira East municipality of the Central Region, is bracing itself for severe flooding in 2025, courtesy of the rampant illegal mining operations (Galamsey) and abandoned pits in the area.

Mr. Yakubu Alhassan, the NADMO director, in an interview on Denkyiraman News, painted a dire picture, highlighting the devastating impact of these activities on the residents of Dunkwa On-Offin.

The crux of the problem lies in the fact that most illegal miners have left their pits uncovered, posing a significant threat to the lives and properties of those living nearby.

Mr. Alhassan expressed deep concern for the innocent individuals who were caught in the crossfire, neither participating in nor benefiting from the mining activities.

To mitigate the situation, education and awareness programs are ongoing at various sites, aimed at encouraging the Galamseyers to adopt safer practices and prevent flooding.

However, Mr. Alhassan lamented that the absence of a Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) has hindered their efforts, as the miners tend to disregard their warnings.

The NADMO director urged residents to support their efforts by adhering to their advice and reporting any illegal activities.

He also cautioned the Galamseyers to cover their pits and avoid leaving behind any hazardous traces that could harm the residents.

“It’s worth noting that illegal mining has been a persistent issue in Ghana, with regulatory weaknesses and lack of enforcement contributing to the problem”, he added.

“The situation highlights the need for a concerted effort from authorities, residents, and miners to address the issue and prevent devastating flooding”.
