Ghana’s passport application centres will introduce a 24-hour service in 2025 to enhance efficiency and convenience for applicants. This initiative will implement a three-shift system, allowing applications to be processed around the clock. The goal is to significantly reduce waiting times and provide greater flexibility for citizens, particularly those with busy schedules or urgent travel needs.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced this reform during a meeting with foreign service officials. He highlighted the government’s commitment to streamlining passport services by increasing capacity, making logistical and financial adjustments, and allocating more resources to address existing backlogs.

In addition, Ghana plans to introduce chip-embedded passports featuring enhanced security measures to modernize the system and facilitate international travel. The timeline for the rollout of the new passport design will be determined after a cabinet meeting scheduled for later this week.
