President John Dramani Mahama has nominated three persons for appointment to the Supreme Court, subject to parliamentary approval.
The nominees are Court of Appeal Justices Sophia Bernasko-Essah and Amoako Asante, as well as legal practitioner and former President of the Ghana Bar Association, Mr Tony Forson.
Justice Amoako Asante previously served as President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice before returning to the Ghanaian bench.
The nominations were made by the President in consultation with the Judicial Council, in accordance with the 1992 Constitution.
If approved by Parliament, the appointments will increase the number of Justices of the Supreme Court from the current 18 to 21, further strengthening the country’s apex court.
The nominees are expected to undergo the constitutionally mandated parliamentary vetting and approval process before being sworn into office as Justices of the Supreme Court.
