The Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira West, Hon. Rudolf Amoako Gyampah, has attributed the postponement of Parliament’s sitting to the government’s inability to release the necessary funds.
Earlier this week, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, announced a delay in the commencement of the Third Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic, citing financial challenges.
Describing the situation as unfortunate, Hon. Gyampah said it was troubling that Parliament’s final sitting for the year had to be postponed due to a lack of funds.
Speaking on Denkyiraman Radio’s “National Agenda” programme with host Mr. Justice Oppong Mensah, the MP noted that the financial crisis has affected multiple sectors, including key ministries, departments, and agencies. He specifically mentioned the Free SHS Secretariat, which he said is also struggling due to delayed funding.
Hon. Gyampah further expressed concern over the government’s failure to pay junior doctors, nurses, and midwives for the past ten months, calling it a clear reflection of poor fiscal management.
He added that the Free SHS programme has suffered setbacks as a result of the Finance Ministry’s delays in disbursing funds, which has impacted the overall efficiency and functionality of public institutions.
The MP concluded by urging the government to “sit up” and take immediate action to address the financial difficulties threatening the smooth operation of state institutions and critical national programmes.
