The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has appealed to the public to remain calm and orderly, warning that anyone who engages in violence during the September 2 Akwatia by-election will face swift action.
Addressing new recruits at the Police Training School in Kyerematen, Eastern Region, Mr. Yohuno reiterated the Service’s readiness to safeguard peace ahead of the polls.
He assured that the Police have adequate personnel and resources to respond to any disturbances, stressing that officers are on high alert.
“We have the men, and we are prepared for every eventuality in Akwatia. Nobody should entertain the idea of fomenting trouble,” he stated.
The IGP further emphasized that neither political parties nor individuals would be allowed to mobilize supporters to create disorder or interfere with the electoral process.
He specifically warned against attempts to disrupt the exercise, including ballot box snatching, adding that the Police have put in place measures to deal decisively with such threats.
As part of security arrangements, Mr. Yohuno revealed that the Service will deploy special vehicles, commonly known as Black Marias, to the constituency.
These mobile detention trucks, he explained, will be used to swiftly arrest, detain, and transport offenders to police cells.
According to him, the measure is aimed at deterring misconduct and assuring Ghanaians of a secure voting environment.
