The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not participate in the upcoming Tamale Central parliamentary by-election to replace the late Member of Parliament, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
The decision was taken at a National Steering Committee meeting held on Monday, August 11, 2025, at the party’s headquarters, in accordance with Article 10(10)(1) of the NPP Constitution.
In its statement, the NPP said the choice was informed by several factors, including the circumstances under which the seat became vacant and the need to avoid further polarisation of the country at a sensitive time.
The party described it as “inhumane and unconscionable” to subject the nation to a competitive process so soon after the death of the MP, adding that the tension and acrimony often associated with by-elections should be avoided.
According to the NPP, the greatest tribute to the late MP would be not only to continue the fight against illegal mining (galamsey) but also to ensure a smooth and peaceful succession for the people of Tamale Central.
The party said that when the Electoral Commission opens nominations for the by-election, it will not file a candidate, in what it described as an act in the national interest.
The Tamale Central seat became vacant following the death of Dr. Murtala Mohammed in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
