A man believed to have stolen a vehicle was brutally assaulted by a mob at Awutu Bereku in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region.
The suspect, identified as Ekow Abekah, a taxi driver from Gomoa Fetteh, is currently receiving treatment at the Awutu Bereku Health Centre.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when the vehicle, with registration number GG 2658–20, was temporarily parked by the roadside. The owner had stepped aside to complete a Mobile Money transaction, while his friend, Isaac Arhin, went to buy food. The keys were left in the ignition, as both expected to return quickly.
Ekow, who some residents claim has a history of mental instability, allegedly jumped into the unattended car and drove off.
This triggered a chase by motorcyclists from Gomoa Ojobi, who eventually caught up with the suspect between Awutu Bereku and Akoti. He was forcibly removed from the vehicle and beaten severely by the crowd. Witnesses say he defecated on himself during the assault.
The vehicle sustained damage during the pursuit, including a broken windscreen and a dented boot.
Police later intervened and rescued the suspect, transporting him to the Awutu Bereku Health Centre for medical attention.
Some residents have since condemned the mob action, arguing that Ekow is well-known in the Gomoa Fetteh community and may not have intended to commit theft.
