A violent altercation between a young couple has resulted in the tragic death of a five-month pregnant woman, Akyaa Francisca, in Dunkwa Soro, located in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality of the Central Region.
According to reports gathered from the family, the incident occurred during a fight between the deceased’s younger sister, Georgina Obeng, 19, and her boyfriend, Emmanuel Bassey. When Akyaa Francisca attempted to intervene and separate the two, Bassey allegedly slashed her throat with a knife, killing her instantly.
He then turned his rage on Georgina, stabbing her multiple times in the lower abdomen and around the vulva. She is currently receiving medical treatment at the Dunkwa Government Hospital, while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the same facility’s morgue.
Police have launched a manhunt for Emmanuel Bassey, who fled the scene and is currently at large.
Speaking to Denkyiraman Radio, the Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Emmanuel Yankey, expressed deep sorrow and disappointment over the incident. He called on the Dunkwa Police Department to intensify efforts to apprehend the suspect.
The victims’ mother revealed that Bassey had a history of physically abusing Georgina, with whom he shares a child. This troubling revelation paints a broader picture of longstanding domestic abuse, now ending in tragedy.
The bereaved family is calling on the authorities to ensure justice is served swiftly.
