The search for a new pope continues at the Vatican after black smoke emerged from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signaling that the first ballot of the papal conclave ended without any candidate receiving the required two-thirds majority.
All 133 cardinal electors, gathered under Michelangelo’s famed ceiling, will resume voting on Thursday, with two ballots scheduled for the morning and two in the afternoon.
The cardinals remain sequestered from the outside world, deliberating in strict confidentiality as the Catholic Church awaits its 267th pope.
