Two Chinese nationals, Huan Ciongjian and Ling Yong, have been arrested along the Bonsa River in the Western Region as part of a crackdown on illegal mining. They have been handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for further investigation and possible repatriation.
In addition to the two Chinese nationals, eleven Ghanaians have also been charged in connection with illegal mining activities. Seven of them have already been arraigned before the Special Court for Illegal Mining in Sekondi.
They are facing charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and conducting mining operations without a valid license. The court has remanded them into custody, with a hearing scheduled for April 17, 2025. Four more suspects are expected to appear before the court for similar offenses.
This operation is part of a broader effort by law enforcement to combat the environmental destruction caused by illegal and unregulated mining. Authorities see it as a crucial step in protecting Ghana’s natural resources and ensuring accountability for those engaged in environmental crimes.
