Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, has called out President John Dramani Mahama for hypocrisy regarding the rising youth unemployment rate.

The Member of Parliament for the Effutu constituency pointed out that despite Mahama’s complaints about youth unemployment, his administration has laid off numerous young people who were employed by the previous government, all within the first 100 days.

Addressing Parliament after President Mahama’s State of the Nation Address, Afenyo-Markin highlighted the irony in the president’s comments on youth unemployment, citing the significant layoffs that occurred early in his administration.

He referenced a popular saying in Accra: “Mahama baako termination bebreebeee,” which roughly translates to “With Mahama, there are a lot of terminations of appointments.”

This discussion follows the State of the Nation Address, during which President Mahama stated that youth unemployment is the biggest challenge facing Ghana. He emphasized that youth unemployment poses a significant threat to national stability and security, and to address this urgent issue, a dedicated Ministry of Youth Development has been established.

The initiative aims to confront the concerns surrounding youth unemployment, acknowledging its potential to lead to social unrest and increased crime. The president stated, “Youth unemployment has led to despair and frustration. This poses a major security risk to our country and requires urgent attention.”
