The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Twifo Atti-Morkwa, Hon. Robert Agyemang Nyantakyi, joined forces with the district police commander and NADMO officer on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, to combat illegal mining on River Pra.
In an exclusive interview with the media, the DCE emphasized the government’s commitment to fighting illegal mining (galamsey) and highlighted his own efforts as DCE to address the issue. However, he noted that the lack of essential equipment, such as life jackets and speedboats, has hindered their efforts.
“We decided to take action today at 7:30 am to confront the illegal miners on River Pra,” the DCE stated. “We urge all communities to get involved and support this fight against illegal mining, which has caused water shortages in Cape Coast and Elmina.”
The NADMO officer for Twifo Atti-Morkwa District, Mr. Richmond Addae Marfo added that illegal mining activities have contributed to recent floods in Twifo Praso and surrounding areas. He emphasized the need for collective action to address the issue.
“The illegal mining expands the river, causing floods,” Mr. Marfo explained. “Unfortunately, some community members support these illegal activities by providing accommodation and other forms of assistance. We need all chiefs, public opinion leaders, and community members to join forces to combat this menace.”
