Nkwanta : 13 die in Nkwanta shooting incident

At least 13 individuals have been confirmed dead in a fresh shooting incident in Nkwanta South in the Oti Region, medical officials have said.

According to eyewitnesses, armed assailants opened fire on residents at the Nkwanta Central Market on Monday in a reported ethnic clash, destroying several properties. Several residents have also fled the town.

No arrests have been made yet as the security agencies investigate the cause of the recent attack.

Nkwanta has over the years recorded ethnic clashes over land disputes and the celebration of a yam festival.

The regional minister of Oti, Joshua Mukubu, said officials are engaging the traditional authorities to rally the locals to allow peace to prevail.

Meanwhile, soldiers, immigration and police personnel have been deployed to the town to maintain law and order.

The Ministry of Interior has imposed a 13-hour-long curfew on Nkwanta Township and banned the carrying of arms and ammunition.
