The Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of lacking credibility over alleged financial irregularities in the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa.
He questioned the credibility of payment records for the exercise, alleging that some Ghanaians listed as beneficiaries had not received the money, while others were associated with invalid dates of birth and payment.
Speaking at the NPP Youth Wing’s “Yɛgye Yɛ Sika” (We Are Demanding Our Money) demonstration on Tuesday, November 3, Dr Ayew Afriye said the discrepancies raised serious concerns about the government’s management of funds allocated for the evacuation exercise.
“We just want to show that the NDC are not credible with what they say and what they do. You said the NPP were corrupt. And then you came in with this. You have a project to evacuate Ghanaians from South Africa and the evacuees are saying I didn’t receive the money, yet you put my name on paper that you have paid,” he said.
Dr Ayew Afriye further alleged that some names on the payment records were fictitious, citing instances where beneficiaries were reportedly linked to dates that were impossible.
He questioned how payment records could contain dates such as February 30 and include individuals who were allegedly yet to be born.
“There are some recipients of the money who are yet to be born. Are you aware? There are some recipients who are yet to be given birth to. It is only under NDC that they put a model of payments where you sign and you are not alive. And then also in some of the data they put 30th February. Have you seen February with 30th before? What kind of lessons are you giving to Ghanaians?” he quizzed.
He said the alleged discrepancies had heightened frustration among the youth, describing the demonstration as an expression of their dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of public funds.
“The youth are not happy. The youth are not very happy about this and this is street action to express our frustration against the government. If this little thing you cannot execute faithfully then what are you doing that we are not aware?” he stated.
The demonstration, dubbed “Yɛgye Yɛ Sika,” was organised by the NPP Youth Wing to demand accountability over the alleged irregularities in the evacuation exercise.
