A 24-year-old mobile money vendor is receiving treatment after she was allegedly attacked and stabbed by suspected armed robbers at Dunkwa Estate in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality of the Central Region.
The incident occurred at about 8:15 pm on Wednesday when the victim, identified as Grace Adu Enin, was reportedly returning home from work.
According to Stella, a friend of the victim, Grace was only a few houses away from her residence when two young men riding a motorbike intercepted her and allegedly demanded a bag containing money.
She said the victim raised an alarm, prompting the suspects to allegedly stab her several times in the ribs, breast and leg before fleeing the scene with an unspecified amount of money.
Residents who responded to the distress call found the assailants had already escaped on the motorbike.
Grace was rushed to the Dunkwa Government Hospital for emergency treatment and was later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, where she is reportedly responding to treatment.
Confirming the incident in an interview with Denkyiraman Radio, the Upper Denkyira Police Commander, DSP Simon Boavo, said investigations had commenced to apprehend the perpetrators.
He appealed to the public to provide credible information that would assist the police in arresting the suspects.
DSP Boavo said although he was out of town at the time of the incident, he immediately deployed investigators to the crime scene.
He said the police retrieved several exhibits, including a knife and what is suspected to be artificial human hair, to aid investigations.
The Police Commander urged residents to improve security around their homes by ensuring adequate lighting in their neighbourhoods to deter criminal activities.
He said the command had intensified patrols to safeguard lives and property, adding that three patrol vehicles were currently deployed along the Dunkwa–Ayenfuri, Dunkwa–Asikuma and Dunkwa township routes due to concerns over highway and armed robbery incidents.
DSP Boavo further encouraged residents to support crime prevention efforts by installing streetlights in vulnerable areas.
He also commended Denkyiraman Radio for its sustained public education campaigns, particularly on market days, encouraging residents and traders to remain vigilant and take measures to safeguard their money and personal safety.
