The Asante Akropong Circuit Court has sentenced 25-year-old Fatawu Amponsah, a Level 200 student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), to 10 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to robbery.

Fatawu, who also works as a driver’s mate, admitted to robbing Juliet Nyarko, a hairdresser apprentice, during the early hours of June 16, 2025, around 2:30 a.m.

According to the prosecution, led by Police Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu, Fatawu attacked the victim while she was returning home. He demanded her iPhone 11, valued at GH₵3,000. When she resisted, he pulled a kitchen knife, assaulted her, and forcefully took the phone.

Juliet’s screams alerted nearby residents, who quickly intervened, chased the suspect, and apprehended him. He was handed over to the Abuakwa Police, where he confessed to the crime.

Presiding Judge Gloria Mensah Bonsu sentenced Fatawu based on his guilty plea and the seriousness of the offense. She noted that the court’s ruling should serve as a strong deterrent to others considering similar acts.
