The Convener of the Anti-Galamsey Coalition, Dr. Ken Ashigbey, is calling for the immediate arrest of the Member of Parliament for Amenfi East, Hon. Nicholas Amankwah, for allegedly defending illegal miners in his constituency.
According to reports, the MP intervened on behalf of suspected galamsey operators during a recent military operation at Wassa Japa.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Ashigbey strongly criticized the MP’s actions, warning that such conduct undermines the national fight against illegal mining.
Citing Section 99 (2b) of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703) as amended by Act 995, he urged the authorities to act swiftly.
“Under Act 995, this MP, who is encouraging people and doing nothing about the illegality despite knowing of it, must be arrested,” he stressed.
“It breaks my heart that no action has been taken against these self-confessed criminals, and now the MP is defending them, despite the devastation galamsey is causing,” Dr. Ashigbey added.
