A fatal accident at Assin Bresiako in the Assin North District of the Central Region claimed nine lives and left several others injured on the morning of Monday, 12 May.

The crash involved a Yutong bus with registration number GT 5136-11, traveling from Cape Coast to Obuasi, and a tipper truck with registration number BA 2267-14, moving in the opposite direction.

According to eyewitnesses, the bus veered off its lane while attempting to overtake another vehicle, resulting in a head-on collision with the truck. Preliminary reports suggest that the bus’s steering wheel may have locked during the maneuver, contributing to the crash.

Elisha Sarpong, Assembly Member for the Assin Bresiako Electoral Area, confirmed the incident. He noted that the bus driver’s mate, who was left behind due to a delay in getting food, later disclosed the steering lock issue during the overtaking attempt.

The tipper truck driver is among the deceased.

Several injured passengers were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment. Among them was a pregnant woman carrying twins. Although doctors were able to deliver the babies, the woman unfortunately passed away.
