The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has disclosed that 40 out of the over 1,300 missing containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have been tracked down and confiscated. The containers, which contained essential electrical equipment, were discovered in a warehouse in Kpone owned by an Indian national. The suspect has since been arrested, following intelligence gathered by national security operatives. Jinapor commended law enforcement agencies for their swift action and assured Ghanaians that efforts are underway to retrieve the remaining missing containers.

According to the minister, the arrested suspect claimed the containers were legally purchased last year, but investigations are ongoing to verify the authenticity of this claim and identify all those involved in the disappearance of state assets. He further revealed that intelligence reports have pointed to other locations where missing containers may be hidden, and authorities are actively tracing them. Jinapor emphasized that those found culpable would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, urging the public not to misinterpret legal actions as political persecution.

The recovery of these containers follows an investigative report that exposed a significant shortfall in ECG’s inventory at the Tema Port. Initially, ECG was found to have 2,491 uncleared containers, but an independent audit revealed that only 1,134 were accounted for, leaving 1,357 unaccounted for. The Chairman of the investigative committee, Prof. Innocent Senyo Acquah, confirmed the discrepancy and called for a comprehensive probe to uncover the full extent of the issue. With national security now involved, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to retrieving all missing assets and holding those responsible accountable.
