President Trump has taken a major step by signing an executive order that kicks off the process of pulling the US out of the World Health Organization. This move is largely driven by the organization’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and what Trump sees as unfair payment demands.
Essentially, the US is set to withdraw from the WHO due to concerns over the organization’s ability to demonstrate independence from political influence and its failure to adopt necessary reforms.
The newly inaugurated US president was clearly impressed as he signed off on a major document, exclaiming “Oooh, that’s a big one” after returning to the White House.
This was just one of many executive actions he signed into effect on his first day in office, setting the tone for his presidency.
Trump has now made his second attempt to withdraw the US from the World Health Organization, having previously tried to do so during his first administration.
Trump was pretty unhappy with how the World Health Organization handled the COVID-19 pandemic, and he started the process of withdrawing the US from the organization back then.
However, President Joe Biden later came in and reversed that decision, putting the US back in the WHO.
“They wanted us back so badly so we’ll see what happens,” Trump said in the Oval Office, referring to the WHO, perhaps hinting the US might return eventually.
The order cited the WHO’s poor handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, its lack of reform, and its vulnerability to political influence as reasons for the US withdrawal.
