Member of Parliament for the Oforikrom Constituency, Hon. Emmanuel Marfo, has stated that the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) failed to effectively guide the government’s policies.
His comments come in the wake of the party’s defeat in the recent general elections, where the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured 56% of the vote compared to the NPP’s 41%.
Speaking on Adom FM, MP Marfo attributed the loss to the inability of the party leadership to maintain control over the government. He explained that when a majority of the party’s Members of Parliament expressed concerns regarding the poor state of the country’s economy and signed a petition for the removal of then-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, the party leadership did not support the MPs in addressing these issues.
Instead, the party leadership chose to remain silent, which Dr. Marfo described as a significant weakness.
“Every political party is supposed to be superior to its government and must guide it in the right direction. If the party fails to do so, it leads itself into a ditch. From my experience, I believe this is what happened to the NPP – the party leaders were unable to control the government,” he said.
Additionally, he mentioned, “About 90 NPP MPs stood up and warned about the poor performance of Ken Ofori-Atta, yet the party leadership did not support the MPs.”
Dr. Emmanuel Marfo also noted that the party’s defeat was one they brought upon themselves, citing contradictions between the policies of President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a key factor.
