Former Black Stars Defender Kalilu Dramani Honoured with Statue, Roundabout in Dunkwa-on-Offin

Residents of Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Central Region have honoured former Ghana international and Black Stars defender Kalilu Dramani with the unveiling of a statue in his honour and the naming of a major roundabout after him.

The recognition formed part of activities marking the fifth anniversary celebration of the Akukudam Club, which used the occasion to celebrate Dramani’s immense contribution to Ghanaian football and his enduring legacy in the sport.

The newly designated Kalilu Dramani Roundabout, now a prominent landmark in the municipality, features a statue of the former defender at its centre, serving as a symbol of pride for the community and a tribute to one of its distinguished sons.

The colourful ceremony attracted a large crowd of football enthusiasts, traditional authorities, residents and invited guests. Former and current football personalities were also present, alongside representatives of Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, clubs where Dramani enjoyed a successful playing career.

Mr Ben Kwame Amoonu, Patron of the Akukudam Club, said the honour reflected the club’s commitment to recognising national heroes whose dedication and achievements had contributed significantly to the development of football in Ghana.

He noted that celebrating sports legends during their lifetime was important, as it not only appreciated their service to the nation but also inspired the younger generation to strive for excellence.

Speaking after the unveiling, Dramani expressed gratitude to the organisers and the people of Dunkwa-on-Offin for the honour, describing the recognition as a memorable and humbling experience.

He urged aspiring footballers to remain focused, disciplined and committed to their goals, stressing that hard work and perseverance were essential ingredients for success in the sport.

Born in Dunkwa-on-Offin on October 21, 1972, Dramani rose to become one of Ghana’s respected defenders, earning admiration through his performances for Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak before representing the Black Stars.

A notable highlight of his career came in 1992 when he was a member of Ghana’s Olympic football team that won bronze at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, making history as the first African nation to win a football medal at the Olympic Games.

The honour bestowed on Dramani has been widely praised by residents and football followers, who described it as a fitting recognition of a player whose achievements brought pride to both Dunkwa-on-Offin and Ghana.
